I recently had the opportunity to speak with a representative of the Oregon Community
Solar Program. If you've ever been interested in using solar energy to reduce your electricity
bill, you'll want to learn more about this program.
The program gives thousands of Oregonians new opportunities to go solar without needing
to own a home, have a sunny roof, or make an upfront investment. Community solar allows
many people to participate in a large off-site solar project and share the benefits. You
subscribe to a portion of a project and then receive a credit on your monthly utility bill.
There is a monthly subscription fee, but for income-qualified participants, it will always be
less than the credit received.
As far as the eligibility guidelines are concerned, here's a quick overview. You must:
• Be an electric customer of Portland General Electric or Pacific Power
• Live in Oregon.
• Low-Income subscribers receive additional bill credits and protection from bill
increases, sign-up fees, and termination fees. You can live in any type of home and
be a renter or owner.

Income Qualifications
Low-income participants have additional protections designed to minimize risk and
provide more stable benefits. To qualify, you must be an eligible utility customer and have a
gross household income at or below 80% of the state median income.

If your income exceeds the qualification guidelines, you can still subscribe to a community
solar project by signing up directly with a project manager. For more information,

offers several important benefits:

from the sun, you help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as air and water
pollution.

fees, allowing them to enjoy many of the same benefits as rooftop solar without the
financial burden.
• It's accessible. Community solar is an excellent option for renters and others who
want to use clean energy but may not have a suitable roof or the ability to invest in a
rooftop solar system.
• It's local. You're investing in projects located within Oregon and your utility service
territory, helping support clean energy and local jobs.
